Recommend Rangitoto for a walking day trip, it’s very unique scenery and a chance for some great walks right by the CBD. I’ve taken a couple friends there now, and they’ve all enjoyed it. Photos and write up for those interested - http://www.jethrocarr.com/2012/03/01/rangitoto-island-adventures/

Australian visitors whom have been to Melbourne Aquarium might be disappointed, it’s quite small compared to what Melbourne has to offer IMHO.
