Top 100 Cheap Eats for Auckland:
There's a Cheap eats top 100 for Auckland. The list for central city is
http://www.metroeats.co.nz/cheap-eats/best-cheap-eats-2014-central-city/
and newton
http://www.metroeats.co.nz/cheap-eats/best-cheap-eats-2014-newton/
This reddit post will have links to all the lists until someone can put it
in the individual URLs in the wiki http://redd.it/2itio4
Malaysian:
The ones on the list I would recommend that is Malaysian is Sri Pinang on
Karangahape Rd and Mamak Malaysian, Chancery Square, 50 Kitchener St, CBD.
This is one of the top 10 in the top 100
They also list Angie's Kitchen, 17 Mount St (it is near uni). I haven't
tried it and but haven't heard anything bad about it. There's another
called Selera on Khyber Pass Rd and is listed in cheap eats
http://www.metroeats.co.nz/cheap-eats/best-cheap-eats-2014-newmarket-and-orakei/
Selera is good too. You can get there by bus or if you're keen, walk there.
Use www.at.govt.nz for bus routes.
Sri Pinang is on 356 Karanghape Rd. [1] They have been going over 20 yrs
and specialise in Nyonya food. $1 corkage for wine. I recommend most dishes
there! my favourites are the fish head curry(you can ask for fish fillets -
no bones or head), rendang and mee goreng. If you go for fish head curry
you need more than one at the table as it is served in a claypot. It isn't
open on Sunday and Monday lunch.
Mamak Malaysian has some nice dishes. This is a malaysian that doesn't
serve pork. So the Char Koay Teow is the mamak style and not malaysian
chinese style. It is good though and quite popular.
Satya South Indian restaurant on 271 K'Rd (aka Karangahape Rd) has some
dishes that you'll find in Malaysia. Eg the Dosa and idli are common in
Malaysian Indian cuisine. Dosa is called Thosai in Malaysia. Idli is spring
hoppers and gluten free. Whether Dosas are gluten free or not depends on
each place's recipe. Satya is also popular with the vegetarian + vegans.
Indonesian:
Unfortunately I know know of some but not tried them. There's a indonesian
food stall at Food Alley on Albert St (opposite Stamford Hotel, on Albert
St close to intersection with Customs st) that I've heard of. Google tells
me it is called Wardini Indonesian http://www.wardani.co.nz. Also
relatively new is a Legianz Waroeng Indonesia at Victoria Park market
http://www.waroenglegianz.co.nz/
Review sites:
Most places but you'll find zomato.com with most listings as it recently
took over the big food review site called MenuMania. The good thing is they
try to have menus (often photos of menu - so not searcheable) and lists the
food hygiene cert.
Yelp started in Auckland a few years ago
Some places have a trip advisor page too.
Google+ is another BUT really none of them are reliable for review and I
tend to take make my decision by looking at a few together. Most like
google+ aren't quick to remove places that have closed or changed names
(don't get me started on this topic - I'll stop here)
Example
Sri Pinang
