Yeah I've had electrical cabinet keys removed from my carry on for the same
provided reason. When I returned from my holiday I found a multitool in my
bag (with the nice blade and all) that made it through 4 airport x-ray
checks,.

Regardless of the security theater played in airports, I've found it best
to put as much stuff in checked as possible to stop those awkward pauses at
the x-ray station when they spend 10 minutes looking at the screen trying
to look through the 100m of network cable, electronics parts, various
laptops, (spare) battery packs, and other weird and wonderful stuff that
they don't usually see in a typical customer.
