People in the Linux community don't have to actively support attacks on
Shanley and similar horrible stuff. All they have to do is comment on all
other aspects of the issue and refrain from saying anything bad about such
attacks and the attackers will take that as support.
If you say "I think that $PERSON_BEING_HARASSED is wrong" without making any
comment about harassment being wrong then people will interpret it as "I think
that $PERSON_BEING_HARASSED is wrong and deserves to be harassed".

There are lots of people who have changed their opinions over time. When
someone changes to the degree that they actively work to refute beliefs that
they used to hold then it doesn't make much sense to attack them for their
past beliefs. As an aside the above Andrew Denton interview with a former
leader of the KKK is worth watching.
