Further to this: there is a difference between Vodafone's "international
roaming" and the "$5/day roaming".

Vodafone's online system should let you select one or the other, but note
that the "international roaming" option does let you use talk, txt, etc,
but at $1/MB and $1/minute. (Yes, *AU$1 *for* 1024KB* of data. Ouch)

The $5/day roaming only charges you *if* you use talk/text/data on the day
(24 hour period). If you are radio silent, there's no charge. If you go
over your normal plan allowance, it's full price ($1/MB)

(Double check your fine print and Vodafone's online customer portal if this
maps to your plan, prepaid will work differently, terms, fees, charges,
llamas, conditions apply, etc)
